OpenAIRE enables public access to scientific publications

open_aireWorldwide currently 2.5 million scientific publications are published each year. This corresponds to an immense knowledge and precious contents on which further research can be established. But unfortunately just a fraction of these articles is available in Open Access repositories or journals. A lot of databases request payment to read the articles.

The European Commission is now counteracting this. Through the project OpenAIRE (Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe) the access to scientific articles, which were published under a FP7 or ERC grant, is enabled. If from now on publications in the field of health, energy, environment, ICT, research infrastructures, social sciences, humanities and science and society are published, they must be deposited through OpenAIRE in open access repositories to be made permanently available worldwide.

This way, the results of publicly funded research should be brought closer to society. Researchers, businessmen and citizens should have the possibility to have online, free and open access to EU-funded research papers. This is last but not least one of the priority of the Innovation Union, the flagship initiative of the “Europe 2020” strategy.
