zooniverseScience belongs not only to scientists. Following this principle, a few years ago the “Citizen Science Web Portal” has been launched in the US. The basic idea of Zooinverso.org was that everybody can be a researcher and help science with his/her knowledge and power of observation. Nowadays the project unifies more than 785’000 volunteers, gaining on average thousand new users a day.

Switzerland also provides its contribution. Kevin Schawinski, professor for astrophysics at the ETH Zurich, was a co-initiator of Galaxy Zoo. The project, which is dealing with the classification of galaxies, has already scored successes with the help of citizen scientists. If you sign up, you will see a random detail of a picture with galaxies. You can answer simple questions about the shape of the pictured objects. A total of 70 citizen scientists will look at a single image and therefore help to identify new galaxies.

Become a part of the community! Explore whale songs, catalogue the ocean floor and analyse cancer data. Under https://www.zooniverse.org/ your help is needed.
